Introduction to Cultural Awareness

This introductory course is a recommended as an introduction for building a better understanding of and improving your interactions with Indigenous people. It is especially designed for those groups and organisations that have direct impact or interaction with Indigenous people and their communities, or organisations that would like to give all their personnel some background to Indigenous culture.
There are many misunderstandings about Australian Aboriginal Culture that undermine attempts to reach reconciliation or improve national Indigenous outcomes. This course targets these misunderstandings and provides participants an opportunity to explore solutions.

Summary of Contents

The short course runs for 4 hours. Participants will experience practical teaching on Australian Aboriginal Culture in terms that make sense to non-indigenous Australians.

The course explains the functioning of traditional Australian Aboriginal society, by comparison and contrast with Western systems. We use this background in traditional culture to better understand contemporary Indigenous culture and briefly examine the pitfalls commonly encountered by non-indigenous Australians when relating to Indigenous people.

Indigenous systems of Law and land tenure
Traditional social structures
Historical influences on Indigenous world view
Inter-Cultural Communication dynamics and skills
